Michelle Johnson, OTD, LISW
Hello ! I’m Dr. Michelle Johnson, but please call me Michelle (she/her/hers). I’m a Doctor of Occupational Therapy, and a Licensed Independent Social Worker who specializes in Sex Therapy.
I first knew I wanted to be a Sex Therapist while I was in high school when I discovered some of the pioneers of the field- Freud, Alfred Kinsey, and Masters and Johnson. Their work ignited my initial passion for all things sexuality and set me on the path of this journey.
Early in my career, I worked at a rehabilitation hospital on the stroke and traumatic brain injury floor, where I was able to see the profound impact these conditions can have on a person’s sexual functioning, relationships, and overall self-esteem. I realized these patients had no clear pathway to address their sexual concerns, which brought me to my Master’s and Doctorate Degrees. During this time, I realized that sexual health and wellness was not being discussed the way it should be, and I wanted to desperately change this.
Over the past ten years, I have conducted research within the areas of masturbation, feminist theory, sex and positioning after an injury or physical disability, and the education of other healthcare providers on how and why we should all be discussing sexuality with our patients.
It is my concrete belief that it is a human right to have access to safe and comprehensive sex education. I utilize a strengths-based approach to help patients explore and embrace their unique sexuality, heal from barriers, and most importantly, to build the healthy and happy sex life we all deserve.
